OUR POMERANIANS

Common Names: Pomeranians, Poms, Pom-Poms

Description: Pomeranians have a compactly build body. A short neck proudly carries a slightly rounded head, an almost lion like mane with a short, fox-like muzzle. The ears are small, eyes brown and alert.. Pomeranians are fluffy dogs that come in a variety of colors. The most available colors are orange, red, cream, brown, and black. Parti-colored Pomeranians are those that have various color markings on white coat and Sable are those with black tips on one of the above colors. There are many other colors of Poms these days such as Blue, Lavender, Beaver as well as new coat paterns like Brindle and Merle.

Size: Pomeranians can weigh from 3-12 pounds. When showing Poms 4 to 6 pounds is preferred. The average height is 6 inches.

Origin: The Pomeranian originated from Iceland and Lapland sled dogs and were named after Pomerania which was located in todays Eastern Germany.

Diet: It dosen't cost much to feed a Pomeranian as they do not consume much food so it is money well invested if you buy dogfoods which have healthier ingredients. Some of the dogfoods with the best ingredients and less fillers we have found are Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul (TM) Dog food, Canidae Dog Food, Wellness brand dog food and Innova brand dog foods. Just because it's a well known name brand such as Science Diet, Iam's, Purina or Pedigree does not mean it is the better food. Look at the ingredients label as a lot of brands use Ground Corn as a cheap main protien source filler. The better brands will have meat (Chicken, Turkey, etc) and meat meal based ingredients listed as the first 1-4 ingredients. You want to keep the teeth in good shape so take it easy with the can foods and table scraps. I won't say don't give it to them at all as I know better. We all need a little treat every now and then just don't over do it.

General Care: Poms have a thick undercoat which needs to be brushed weekly exspecialy during the summer shedding season.

Compatibility: While some Poms will tolerate small children most prefer the company of adults or older children. They are intelligent and seem to know that those little children can be a little too rough for them. Every dog is different though as most our Poms totally adore all of my children while our male "BO" is my baby and guardian.

Housing: With their small size pomeranians are suitable for apartment life

Bark: Oh yes they do bark, some more than others but don't expect a pom to refrain from barking when something out of the ordinary stirs. They are the perfect pint sized companion guard dogs.

Life Span: Poms normaly live about 10-12 years.
